"Many of Delaware's school district superintendents make higher salaries than high-ranking officials in state government. They also make more in many cases than superintendents in nearby states, according to a report released Monday by the state auditor's office." -- from a News Journal story by Ed Kenney.  "State Auditor R. Tom Wagner Jr. ... wants the state to consolidate its 19 districts, saying such a move would trim excess administrators and keep more education dollars in the classroom. Delaware has three districts -- Delmar, Polytech and Sussex Tech -- that have one building each."

I don't know if consolidating would help. I think that may just strech them a little too thin.

I have been following this.  I read the salary postings today.

I was immediately concerned with consolidating districts.  I live in Appo and would hate to have our district change.  With consolidation, I fear redistricting and that puts us in danger of being redistricted.

I looked at the info provided and it looked like the smallest districts are in the lower end of the state.  You have districts with only a few schools with supers making very close to what supers in the larger districts are making.  With consolidation, you open up the money for the schools.  In theory a great idea - as long as that happens.

The salary these superintendents make is disgusting. I will never understand how things are the way they are. How much sense does it make to get rid of teachers and paraprofessionals because of money issues and not cut these outrageous salaries. It's hard to hear the schools say there is no money for such and such when one people are making these salaries. There's money. It is just going to the wrong place. I was so disgusted I couldn't even read the NJ article.

Consolidating is a good idea. 19 school districts in a state as small as ours is ridiculuous. To much duplication of supplies and books and such. Not to mention to many big money making jobs.

My initial response is that consolidating isn't always a good thing.  Too many kids and too many teachers under one leadership just sounds like a recipe for people slipping through the cracks.  I'd prefer smaller schools with administrators who actually know the students and staff.

New Castle County school consolidated when I was still in school (I'm pretty sure when I graduated it was from the "New Castle County Consolidated School District").  I know that didn't last long and was not sucessful, so things went back to normal.   I hope they think long and hard before making this drastic decision again.    I was also surprised to see much smaller district supers making so much more money than the upstate supers.  Maybe they have longer tenure?

I was just reading this post and a screen came up saying thank you for reporting abuse.  I didn't mean to do that!

I didn't read the article, but I have long wondered why there needs to be so many school districts in Delaware.  I moved here from Ohio which also had a lot of school districts and I thought it was odd and unecessary.  I grew up in VA was there for all of my schooling.  They do not have school districts per se.  Each county is it's own "district".  That means one school board, one superintendent, one main facility etc. only for a whole county.  The public schools in VA are excellent and it's a large state with large counties and they seem to manage just fine.

Isn't it interesting that the superindentents make more money than the surrounding states but yet our teachers make less?

Okay, the need to the money away from the administrators & give it to the teachers.  We need to teacher our children & the only way to get additional money it seems is for the supers to take a pay cut if it is good enough for our governor to take a pay cut why isn't good enough for the supers?

I am all for it. I honestly do not understand why DE needs 19 Superintendants. What a quick an easy way to help balance the budget. However, I do think 3 may be too few so there needs to be a good middle ground. I will be watching this one closely!
