I think the trip will go well and I am planning for 7 hours..due to extra stops, but I am also a glass is half full kinda gal!!!
Does anyone have an suggestions or tips..and yes, we do have a DVD player!!!

We recently when to Gaitlinburg, TN with our 18 month old and 2 dachshunds. It was a 9 hour drive. We survived. My advice is to leave when they should be sleeping. Either around bed time or very early morning. Other then that, we took plently of snacks, books and talking toys! Good luck!

Valium - for you (while DH drives of course - and you can switch off!)!
Try to drive when they are tired and more likely to sleep during the trip.
Safe journey.

We just got back from a 6 hour drive to Raleigh, NC with DS (21 months). We had the DVD player and lots of snacks. We didn't have the dogs but when we did stop it was very brief(about 10 minutes). We found that if we stopped longer DS had a harder time getting back in the car. We also took big board books with the flaps so DS could find the items and they entertained him for awhile.
Have a safe and fun trip!!

Get some new toys/books for DD and have a handy to give to her. Also like the others said, try to travel when they would be sleeping. Although that never seems to work for us, lol.
Where is central PA are you heading? My parents are in that area.

Chocolate for you and DH, ear plugs for the driver, two of those bendy toys for DD - the ones who are totally flexible. She'll be able to have them talk to and play with each other. If you get them at a dollar store, it won't matter as much if she doesn't want anything to do with them. If DD's into music, I just saw a reference to a CD- Family Time by Ziggy Marley. I have no idea how good it is, but I wanted to check it out for my favorite family. I figure if the 'adults' enjoy Marley, it might be a reasonable purchase. If it's horrible, I will deny ever mentioning it. Other supplies - extra wipes, ziplock baggies to hold opened snacks that aren't in resealable containers, and a fairly large trash container. Another idea is to tie toys to the car seat make it easy for DD to retrieve them herself if she drops them. It's been soooooooooo long since I took a car trip with a young child, I don't have many ideas. Hope you have a smooth journey and arrive with smiles on all faces.

DC Pete, my 4 year old and 2 year old LOVE Ziggly Marley's Family time! My 2 year likes the train song mostly! :) It's catchy too and I catch myself singing along sometimes!

My two LO's are completely different, so I tried lots of different things.DH's family is from Virginia, so we take the 4 hour car ride often. With DS (born first) we would always travel when he was supposed to be sleeping. He was a GREAT car sleeper. Then DD was born!! She actually travels better when she's NOT tired! Go figure. We tried leaving when she was tired a few times and it was not fun. She would be over tired, not sleep and make the drive LOTS of fun! So, it just depends on your DD's.
Definitely get new things! It sounds really cheesy to go out and buy new stuff, but I'm telling you it really works! And still does! Even with DS who's almost 6. You don't have to spend a lot, but just something they haven't seen before. New coloring books, fun new crayons, small toys, even new snacks! The other thing that both of our kids loved when they first got them were CD players. I don't know, do people still call them walkmans? We got one for DS, with a few new CDs and he thought it was the greatest thing. DD also got her first one when she turned 2...a few Dora CDs and she's in heaven. It took them a few minutes to get used to the headphones, but then they were okay.
When DD was a baby, I would sometimes sit in the back for long rides. I spent half the time turned around anyway, and it helped her a lot. She did not travel well as a baby! She hated the car. Good Luck!! Have fun!!
Our team "Saving Second Base" will be walking October 18th to help raise money for Breast Cancer. Ask me how you can help!!!
