The 550 people are actually Valero employees - there are just as many union workers/contractors there who will be laid off as well. 

WOW.....my neighbor works there and he had been having a week off here and there without pay since summer....its a shame...he said he was 2 years from retirement, too.  This is awful......

My thoughts are with all those who will be losing jobs or have already lost jobs in this bad economy.  I pray things turn around soon!

Yes, with all of the contractors included, there are well over a thousand people losing their jobs.  Both of my brothers are included in that total.  I am so upset over this right now.

Thanks, Sydnesmom!  At least my brothers are contractors so they still have the potential to go elsewhere - the only problem is, there's no where else to go right now!   I feel extra bad for the actual Valero employees - I wonder if they will be receiving any form of severance pay and what their options are.  Even to qualify for the highest amount of unemployment ($355 or so) won't cut it, as most peoples' wages are well over $1000 per week.  I just wish there had been more notice!! My oldest brother said that the News Journal reported it on Facebook before it had even been announced!  No notice whatsoever.  Just told them and said they all had to be out by noon.

I am so sick over this...thousands of jobs lost with no where for these people to go!
